Why it takes a 16mm size instead of 17mm
I would have given a 5 star if Gold Plug had made it a standard BMW plug size of 17mm.The problem here is that if you bring your car in to service at the dealer, a 17mm socket size might work for this plug, but there is a potential danger of rounding the nut shoulders if the mechanic is not aware that the size of the plug is 16mm. Not all mechanics are on top of things, especially using a size 17mm would still work, but it does feel loose and while applying force will round the shoulders. Normally I don't take my car in to the dealer for oil change, but in this case, I split the recommended oil change duration in half. Since I still have the extended warranty from BMW, but I had to have the dealer validate the oil change which is free because it is covered. Now I'm afraid to take it in for service for fear of them ruining the drain plug, and worse yet having to do repair in case this happens. For this reason, I don't recommend this plug for BMWs. Gold plug should have used a metric size 17mm or a size totally different so that a size 17mm socket wrench won't even fit. This way it would have eliminated the danger of rounding the plug. Small detail, but the devil is in the detail. Could you imagine having a plug with rounded/damaged shoulders and having to perform operations such as drilling the plug out because you cannot use a wrench on it ? Using a 16mm size for a 17mm standard is just too close for comfort and I wouldn't blame any mechanics for rounding the nut because he would have used a 17mm standard all the time without being aware that this plug which is SAE size fits a 16mm socket wrench. For those BMW owners already installed this plug and have the need to have other mechanics (dealers or private shop) do any oil change, I would forewarn the service provider of the abnormality of this plug being a 16mm, NOT 17mm. Hopefully this would raise a red flag in alerting the mechanic performing this service task.Update :Great that Gold Plug listens. They responded by making this plug 17mm for BMW. See the followup on my review. As a consequence, I'm updating the review to 5 stars. In our world, nobody is perfect, but acknowledging and making corrections when it is warranted is to be applauded.

hope it works. should help protect engine.
If you go to the goldplug web site, they have a cross reference where you can look up your vehicle. The magnet seems strong. Nicely made.

Terrible for N54 (BMW 335i)
This thing leaks. Even with the right washer/size it leaks. Left a droplet mess on my driveway. I'd recommend staying away if you have a BMW 335i with a N54 engine (and I'm sure many other BMW models).

Does not fit E46 M3
Does not fit the E46 M3 S54 engine even though their website says it does. There is a lip next to where the drain plug screws in and the socket won't fit between the lip when tightening down the plug down.
